"It was a miracle that nobody was killed and that no horses were killed," said veteran driver Rick Zeron, who was near the tail of the chain-reaction collisions of eight horse-and-driver tandems. Horses were sprawled along the cold backstretch – two fought to get free of their entangled racing sulkies – as medical staff and ambulances raced to the fallen after a horrible Monday night pacing accident. Lying nearby were badly injured Roger Mayotte and Mario Baillargeon, while Chris Christoforou, on his hands and knees, vomited after his horse nearly trampled a friend. Harness driver Robert Shepherd was motionless on the Woodbine racetrack, legs twisted grotesquely, screaming in tortured pain.
